As part of the overall Red Line system design, IndyGo is facilitating a design competition for the 28 rapid transit stations along Phase 1 of the Red Line BRT route. Submissions were due Friday, July 8 and feedback from the public will be accepted online and at public meetings.
“The design of the Red Line stations will be a highly impactful component of the overall project,” stated IndyGo President and CEO, Mike Terry. “Tens of thousands of passengers, car commuters, and neighbors will interact with the Red Line every day. The look and feel of these stations should represent the community, which is why we’ve approached this through a collaborative and transparent process.”
Submissions will be reviewed by structural engineers on the Red Line team, the Indianapolis Historical Preservation Commission, and by IndyGo for budgetary, operational, structural, and historic compatibility considerations. Designs meeting the competition requirements and technical feasibility will also be reviewed by a panel of judges with experience in arts, design, architecture, construction, and accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Judges will provide feedback on placemaking potential and impact on rider experience. IndyGo will engage the public in a voting process, which will influence the final outcome of the contest. The design competition winner will be announced later this summer. For more details, view the Red Line Design Competition Booklet on the Red Line Design Competition website.

]]>The post 20 College Students Take to the Streets to Educate on Transit appeared first on Indy Connect.
]]>College students from IUPUI, Indiana University, Ball State University and George Washington University will take to the streets starting tomorrow to educate the public about the Marion County Transit Plan.
These transit street team members will answer questions and provide information to the public about improvements proposed in the plan. The participating students will be easy to spot: They’ll wear bright blue “Ask me about Transit” shirts and operate remote-control toy buses to attract attention.
The street team will debut Friday between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at City Market during Bike to Work Day festivities. They’ll also be at the Broad Ripple Art Fair over the weekend.
Indy Connect – the partnership of IndyGo, the Metropolitan Planning Organization and Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority – hired the students for a street team that will attend fairs, festivals and events to educate the public about the specifics of the Marion County Transit Plan.
On Nov. 8, Marion County voters will have the opportunity to improve mass transit by voting in a referendum to fund the Marion County Transit Plan. With approval of the proposal, residents will pay 0.25 percent income tax to increase IndyGo’s service by 70 percent, shorten waits and extend evening hours and weekend service, as well as to add three rapid transit lines (Red, Blue and Purple) in high-ridership corridors. For more information, visit www.IndyConnect.org, or see a street team member.
In addition to the Indy Connect street team, IndyGo will deploy more than 50 trained volunteers to act as transit ambassadors at the new downtown Julia M. Carson Transit Center, at stops around town, and on buses. Working May 23 through July 2, the transit ambassadors will assist riders with using the IndyGo bus system and share information about upcoming IndyGo route changes and project updates.
The new Julia M. Carson Transit Center will open in June, and along with it will come changes to many of IndyGo’s routes, including new ways to transfer between routes downtown. The transit ambassadors will help people learn the downtown route changes and how to use the new transit center, all with the mission of offering a warm welcome, information and a friendly face.

]]>
May 16, 2016 — As Indianapolis puts increasing emphasis on walkability and its impact on economic opportunities, a national real estate and urban planning expert will participate in a June 9 public conversation about Indy’s walkable future.
Christopher B. Leinberger, co-author of “Foot Traffic Ahead,” which ranks the country’s 30 largest metropolitan areas based on the strength of their Walkable Urban Places, will discuss the beneficial effects of businesses locating close together, including better access to workers and customers, new ideas inspired by competition, and a collective success that exceeds what businesses could achieve separately.
When “Foot Traffic Ahead” was first published in 2014, the Indy metro area wasn’t included because it ranks 33rd in population. But Leinberger and his co-author, Patrick Lynch, are updating the study and including metro Indy. The updated study will be released June 14.
Leinberger will specifically discuss Indy’s walkability as it compares to other cities, what Indy’s ranking might mean for the local economy, and the trend of Walkable Urbanism as it relates to mass transit. In addition, he’ll talk about how more walkable regions correlate with higher earnings, a more educated workforce, higher GDP, better quality of life and stronger real estate markets. In advance of the session, Leinberger will tour the city and be briefed on the Marion County Transit Plan.
“A Conversation about Indy’s Walkable Future” will take place June 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Ivy Tech Ivy Tech Corporate College and Culinary Center, Rooms 119 and 121, 2820 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. It is open to the public and free of charge.
Leinberger is a land-use strategist, teacher, developer, researcher and author of “The Option of Urbanism, Investing in a New American Dream” and “Strategic Planning for Real Estate Companies.” His is president of LOCUS, a network of responsible real estate developers and investors, which is a program of Smart Growth America. He writes regularly for The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times. For more information, visit http://chrisleinberger.com/.
Following Leinberger’s presentation, a question-and-answer session moderated by Bill Ehret, a commercial Realtor with Avison Young and board member of the Central Indiana Regional Transit Authority (CIRTA), will allow attendees to engage in the conversation.
